A big bonus is only useful if its rules suit your budget and the games you want to play. Check the play-through amount, maximum bet and cashout cap before you claim. We'd skip an offer that needs a larger deposit than you planned.

Can you still claim an old offer?

The May 2021 offers ended on 31 May 2021. If you've arrived with an old coupon, don't deposit expecting it to work. Open the casino's current promotion terms and check the closing date, eligible accounts and payment methods before you decide whether to claim anything.

Use our bonuses hub to compare the different types of offer. A familiar promotion name doesn't mean the terms are the same as last time. Save the terms you accept, including the code and deadline, so you can refer to them if your account shows a different bonus.

What a promotion is made of

Look for the trigger, reward and play-through rules first. You'll usually need to register, deposit or enter a code to get bonus funds or free spins. Then check the maximum bet, cashout cap and deadline, along with any excluded games, countries or payment methods.

You'll often see the reward in large print and the limits in a separate terms link. Open that link before you pay. If you can't work out which balance you'll have to play through or which games count, ask support for a specific answer before accepting the bonus.

Deposit bonuses and free spins

A deposit bonus adds funds in proportion to your deposit, often in bands, so that a larger deposit earns a larger percentage. Free spins give a fixed number of spins on a named slot, usually at a fixed stake per spin. Both are tied to terms that say how winnings are treated, and in many offers winnings from free spins are converted to bonus funds that carry their own wagering.

Our guides to deposit bonuses and exclusive bonuses show how to read these terms and work through the arithmetic. The free spins page covers the spin-based offers.

A worked example in rand

These numbers are invented to show the method and are not an operator's offer. Suppose a casino adds a 100% bonus on a R500 deposit, so your balance becomes R1,000, and sets wagering at 30 times the deposit plus bonus. The amount you must stake before the bonus can be released is 30 times R1,000, which is R30,000.

At R10 a spin that is 3,000 spins. Because slots return less than they take over time, the expected result of staking R30,000 is a loss, and the more you stake the more of the balance the house edge claims. The example doesn't mean such offers are never worthwhile. It means the right comparison is the total stake required, not the size of the headline bonus.

Closing dates, codes and eligibility

A promotion that says valid until a date should state the time zone and whether the date is inclusive. A coupon that must be entered at deposit can usually not be added afterwards. Many offers are limited to a single use per player, or to new accounts only, and some exclude certain payment methods. If a rule is unclear, ask support in writing and keep the answer.

Eligibility also depends on where you live. A promotion open to some countries may not be open to South Africa, and an account in a restricted country can have winnings voided. Always read the restricted-country and payment-method clauses, not just the offer text.

Staying in control of bonuses

A bonus is not free money. It's a trade: extra funds in return for a commitment to stake a large multiple of them. Decide whether the trade suits your budget before you accept, and remember that you can usually decline a bonus at deposit. Never raise a deposit to reach a higher bonus band.

Online gambling is regulated in South Africa and the National Gambling Board's FAQ explains that online gambling is not legal unless it is authorised under the National Gambling Act or another national law, while betting with a licensed South African bookmaker is lawful. Check who licensed an operator before you rely on any promotion. If gambling stops being fun, the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation helpline is 0800 006 008 (the number the National Gambling Board publishes), and our responsible gambling page explains how to set limits and self-exclude.

Frequently asked questions

Are the May 2021 offers still available?

No. They closed on 31 May 2021. Check a current offer's own terms before using a code or making a deposit.

Where can I find current bonus information?

Use our bonuses hub and the two bonus guides, then confirm every figure on the casino's own promotions page and terms before you deposit.

Does a bigger bonus mean a better offer?

Not necessarily. The wagering requirement, the maximum bet, the cashout cap and the excluded games decide what the bonus is worth, and a larger bonus often carries a larger total stake.

Can I claim a bonus after I have deposited?

Often not. Many codes must be entered at the time of the deposit. Read the terms first, and ask support in writing if you're unsure.
