Is Polymarket legal in South Africa?
South African gambling law allows online betting through totalisators and bookmakers licensed by provincial gambling boards. It does not specifically licence crypto prediction markets such as Polymarket. Polymarket is not overseen by a South African gambling regulator. This is information, not legal advice - get regulated counsel if you need a determination.

Answer first
South Africa licences online betting via provincial boards for bookmakers and totalisators. Prediction-market platforms like Polymarket sit outside that named framework. TechCentral reported on 27 October 2026 that no South African regulator oversees Polymarket, while licensed bookmakers want prediction markets shut out until the law covers them. South Africa is not on Polymarket’s restricted-jurisdiction list (unlike the US, UK, France, Australia and Zimbabwe, where new positions are blocked).
Whether using Polymarket from South Africa is lawful for a given person is a legal question we cannot answer. Read the National Gambling Act framework with a qualified adviser, and check Polymarket’s own terms.
TechCentral volume snapshot
TechCentral (Duncan McLeod, 27 October 2026) reported about US$379,000 traded across Polymarket’s eight South African metro mayor markets ahead of the 4 November 2026 local elections, with Johannesburg around US$135,000 and Cape Town about US$11,700. Volume counts money each time it changes hands. Source: TechCentral - Polymarket South Africa mayor markets.
Licensed SA alternatives (bookmakers)
If you want election or sports prices through the licensed bookmaker channel, use operators that appear on the NGB verified operators list. One prediction-style / exchange brand discussed in SA coverage is Betmatch, associated in reporting with ZAR Prive.
ZAR Prive (Pty) Ltd is confirmed on the NGB Verified Operators list as a BOOKMAKER in North-West (Taung) as of our 5 November 2026 check. That supports describing ZAR Prive as an NGB-listed bookmaker. It does not automatically make every Betmatch product identical to a provincial sports book - read the brand’s own licence disclosures.
We do not have a verified Betmatch affiliate tracker. Until one exists, we link only for reference:
betmatch.co.za (informational - no commercial CTA).
SABA / industry position (high level)
Licensed bookmaker associations have argued that prediction markets should be treated as unlawful until legislation expressly covers them. That lobbying position is contested and political; it is not a court judgment. Track primary sources before repeating stronger wording.
